Michael Roy "Ben" Johnson

Long time Kittitas County resident, Michael Roy Johnson, passed away at home on Dec 5th, 2025. He was 73. Born on Jan 15, 1952 in Kensal, N.D. to Oliver and Nadine Johnson. The second of seven children, the family moved to Kittitas Valley and made it their generational home. He was preceded in death by both parents, his older brother Patrick, younger brothers Dennis, Tom (TJ), and Jim. He is survived by his younger sisters, Mary Anne Johnson and Linda Huber. He is also survived by his children, Colette Elliott, Shawna Case-Bekish, Benjamin and Robert Johnson. As well as 15 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends considered as family.

Michael (known to many as Ben) was a force to be reckoned with. You either loved him or you didnt, and honestly he cared not either way. He loved rock hunting; a proud conqueror of the illusive, stunning Ellensburg Blue, as well as other "nice looking" rocks. He would show up with doughnuts for the grandkids and a sinkfull's worth of random rocks to wash at Colette's house on the regular. He was a staple in our youths sports program, referring basketball at the high school level. Sports being one of his other passions in life, he flowed from ref to coach for his kids, basketball, baseball, football. He showed up to home and away games consistently, cheering loudest for his kids.

He loved music. He loved dancing anywhere, ready to twirl his girls, and jump around with his boys. He loved to sing. He was the best singer,just ask him! He loved playing his guitar anywhere, even at the most inoportune moments at times.

He was far from perfect, and he made mistakes, later trying to atone for those actions that hurt the ones he cared for the most. He was cared for, protected and loved by those who loved him til then end. He left this world waving or flipping the bird, however you may remember how he said goodbye to you.
