KIMMEL, Michael "Mike," passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at the Beth Sholom Home in Richmond, Va. He is survived by his nieces and nephews, David Kimmel and his wife, Margaret, Frances Kimmel and Fran Carlton, all of Richmond, Va., Donnie Satisky of Leesburg, Va., Franki Satisky of Portland, Ore., Ronnie Kimmel and his wife, Elizabeth, of Dunn, N.C., Barbara Bland and her husband, John, of Atlanta, Ga.; and great-nephew, Gary Carlton; and many other loving great-nieces and nephews. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his caring generosity to family and talents as both a musician and artist. Mike served his country in the U.S. Army Intelligence Section in the 12th Army Group with General Omar Bradley. During this time he worked close to the front lines doing cartography and lettering on overlays of battle maps. His maps are now archived in military history. He was a staff artist for the Lowe's Theater, where he hand-lettered movie posters. He later operated the Art Guild Studio, where he represented many prominent business clients. He was the "Michael Angelo" of hand-lettered signs. Mike was a lifetime member of the Richmond Musicians Association and a drummer with local dance bands. He was a member of Temple Beth-El. A funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 14, 2013 at Oakwood Hebrew Cemetery, 1620 Oakwood Ave., Richmond, Va. His funeral will be a celebration of his life, not a sad day, for he lived a long life, 100 years, and passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and caregivers.

Mike Kimmel Handwork outside Byrd Theatre
Mike was both an amazing artist and amazingly nice man. His distinctive sign work is part of the history of almost every theatre in Richmond, and is still represented by several pieces in use today at the Byrd Theatre....the last of which he painted when he was 89! His talent and personality will be greatly missed....but if I am lucky enough to see the pearly gates, it will not surprise me to find "Welcome To Heaven" in Mike's signature lettering on display there.

Back in the mid-70's I was an aspiring young lettering artist. I was told to go see Mike for some advice on getting started in the business. Even though I didn't know him and had no appointment, he graciously welcomed me into his studio and spent well over an hour talking letters and showcards, encouraging me and offering any assistance he could to help me get established in the trade. He was truly a master of the craft and to my mind the king of kerning and letter-spacing! We should all...

I met Mike in the late 1970's. He could be found in the back od Pearly's Deli on Grace St. most every morning. We would talk about music and dance bands. He would always be joking about having to play at the Waldolf Astoria or Tantilla Gardens on Friday night. Such a gentle soul and lovely person. You will be missed.

Dear Mike, It was an honor to know you. The memories of your great stories during WW2 will live on, and so too will the official design for the U.S. Military "Airborne".

Always had a good time with Uncle Mike. He always had a joke or some comment to make you chuckle. They never got old to me, I just found myself filling in the blank or saying them before he did. He was Always grateful to me and encouraging. I loved when he would pretend to box with me. And then usually he would say... I used to be a boxer down in Florida...yea I boxed oranges and grapefruit. ha ha. miss ya Uncle Mike!
