I was at school with Michael, in both primary and high school. He was always the boy, the man, that people turned to. In his years in State Parliament he was affectionately known as "the minister for bus-stops". It probably started as some sort of a put-down, but in fact it fitted him handsomely. For he was always a people's representative who actually sought to represent people.

Saddened to hear about Mr Mahers passing, he was godsend to my family in very hard times. A true gentleman and a rarity in his field. Rest in peace.

We only knew Michael for a short time and would have loved to have known him better. He was a great man, highly regarded by all who knew him. We offer our deepest sympathy to Margaret and his family.

Even as a child he always spoke to me as an adult and never failed to ask after my plans and (few) successes, and I still vividly recall running...

Michael was an exceptional man and I consider myself very fortunate to have known him and worked with him. In his heyday he spent his time helping others. He loved the people that he represented in parliament, his family and his God. We are the richer that he walked amongst us.
