A giant of a physician. He took the amount of time he thought was necessary to explain the likely causes and treatment of melanoma on my initial visit. My favorite image of him was sitting at a microscope examining slides; he didn´t rely solely on the path reports and needed to see for himself. I came to Jefferson in 1971, the year Mike was Chief Resident. He was a character whom I will never forget. He was a remarkable organizer and fantastic physician even as a resident, a brilliant researcher and a leader; and he just got better (and funnier) as he aged. After making quite a name for himself in melanoma, he returned to take the helm from Chester Southam of the Division of Oncology at Jefferson on the 10th Curtis.
