Cox Collins Funeral Home - Mullins Obituary

Mr. Michael Jenning McKenzie, 66, of Mullins, passed away at his home after a brief illness.

Michael was born on January 28, 1957, in Mullins, South Carolina, a son of the late Theodore Jennings McKenzie and the late Annie Virginia Hooks McKenzie. Mike was a graduate of Mullins High School, where he excelled as a baseball player for the Mullins Auctioneers. Michael was voted Most Valuable Player for his senior year with the Auctioneers. He continued his education at Francis Marion University. Mike’s love of baseball continued with him over the years, especially through his fandom and love for the Atlanta Braves. Michael was also a gearhead, loving cars of all sorts, but his heart belonged to the Corvettes. No matter the year, make, or model, the Vette always held the top spot for Mike. Michael had worked in the Textile Industry and had worked with Anvil Knitwear for several years during its time in Mullins. Mike was of the Christian faith.

Surviving Michael is his son, Tyler Jennings McKenzie and his wife, Lindsey, of West Columbia; his two sisters, Betty Lou McKenzie Jones of Baltimore, MD, and Patty Sue McKenzie Coleman of Marion; his two brothers, Dupree McKenzie, and his wife Jeanne, of Irmo, SC, and Jack A. McKenzie of Clemson; five nieces, and four nephews.

Michael was predeceased by his brother, Jimmy Wayne McKenzie.

A memorial service for Mike will be held Sunday, January 28, 2024, at Riverside Cemetery in Nichols, S.C., with Rev. Adam Work officiating.

A guestbook for Mike is available on our website or one may post to our Facebook page to share kind words and memories of Mr. McKenzie for the family.

I am saddened by the loss of the McKenzie Family at Mike's passing. I have not seen Mike since we were little kids, but he and his family will be in my thoughts and prayers at this time.

Mark and I send our condolences and prayers to the McKenzie family.

I remember Mike as a very young child. I was best friends with DuPree since before we were 10 years old and played together all the time. Mike was just a baby, and I had the opportunity to watch him grow up; wanting to tag along with DuPree when he could, like everyone does with a big brother. When we left for college, Mike was around 10 or 11 years old, and he had become a "young gentleman". I would often see him around town in later years and always had respect for him as a young adult. It...
