O'Brien Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services - South Hadley Obituary

David J. Blanchard, 82, passed away quietly and peacefully on Thursday, September 25th.

Born in Holyoke, he was the son of the late John J. and Mary (Ford) Blanchard. David was a proud graduate of South Hadley High School, Class of 1960, and went on to earn his Associate in Science degree from Holyoke Junior College, where he completed the basic engineering curriculum.

David began his professional journey at J. Russell & Company as a clerk before joining his father in the family home heating oil business. He later became the owner and operator of Blanchard Oil Company, continuing the family legacy with dedication and integrity. He proudly held a Massachusetts Construction Supervisor license, which he utilized each summer while completing home improvement projects for his dedicated clients. His strong work ethic and craftsmanship were widely admired.

A skilled and passionate fisherman, David found great joy in teaching and sharing his love of the sport with his sons and grandsons. He also gave back to his community as a youth soccer coach in the Holyoke Youth Soccer League, mentoring young athletes and supporting local sports.

David is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nancy; sons David M. Blanchard and his wife Wanda, Jonathan Blanchard, and Michael Blanchard and his wife Carrie; his sister Elizabeth “Liz” Methot; sister-in-law Priscilla Brochu; and his cherished grandchildren Sebastian, Benjamin, Gabriel, Nathaniel, and Sierra. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who offered him comfort and companionship throughout his life.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, October 1st, from 10:00–11:00 a.m. at the O’Brien Family Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in St. Rose Cemetery.

Rather than sending flowers, the family invites you to donate in David’s memory to either The Miracle League of Western Massachusetts (miracleleaguewestma.com/donate) or Neighbors Helping Neighbors, Inc. (nhnfoodpantry.org).

Not sure what to say?

We would like to express our condolences to the entire Blanchard Family. David was such a huge supporter of not only his grandson Benjamin on the field but the entire Miracle League of Western MA family. He could be seen at every game on Sunday wearing his Miracle League hat proudly and cheering on the kids! We will miss seeing him at the game. We know he will be there in spirit with the rest of the family! God Bless You All
Your Miracle League of Western MA Family

My condolences to the Blanchard Family.
Especially to “Grandma, Nancy”. May you find peace and comfort in the memories you shared with “Grandpa Dave “. He was a man of few words but his action spoke volumes. He was a great grandfather to the boys showing them to ride bikes, now the the lawn and build things. I witnessed the love he showed the boys by his teachings and mentoring. I will miss seeing him at the family gatherings and birthday celebrations. Till we meet again , “Granpa...
