I first met Mike, appropriately enough, though an exchange of letters, when he was working on Mandarins, Jews, and Missionaries. Later I met him in person when we came together to found the Sino-Judaic Institute.
He was a fine man, a wonderful scholar, and did so much to further interest in our field. I will forever remember that rumbly voice of his and cherish his wise counsel.
