Not sure what to say?

Hard to believe a year has gone by since Mike left this world. I still ride my bike over to the Duniway Park track, and I look up at Terwilliger Plaza and I think of Mike and Jackie. Jackie has a spirit and persona of her own and will continue to be that remarkably caring person who people only say kind things about, so all is still well in the world. Mike is the only person I know who sailed on the Queen Mary when it still crossed the Atlantic, and I know that one time he carried his bike...

Just very recently I saw the notice about Michael. I'm so terribly sorry for this news. My husband, also a known photographer, Clyde Keller, knew Michael from years back. We've both been very fond of him and Jackie Spurlock as well. I'm sending my very deepest condolences to Jackie Spurlock and all of the family. As a widow I understand the depths of sorrow when your lifetime mate passes. Be with the Angels, Michael. We cared for you. Jackie is in our prayers.

I am lucky to have had Mike in PSU geography classes starting in 1968. We were friends ever since. He was a true cosmopolitan with unbounded curiosity about everything and in everyone he met. I took Mike up on his invitation to visit him and Jackie in Iran during the No Ruz holidays in March and April, 1976 (1354/55). I was amazed at how he had such a rapport with so many Iranians and Afghanis during the trip from Teheran to Kabul and back to Mike and Jackie's Peace Corps home in Riz near...

Dear Jackie and family, My deepest sympathy on your loss of Mike. My most recent memory of seeing Mike was last year when I made a visit to see your new home and Mike had just gotten back from a yoga class (I think) and had a big smile on his face was in great spirits. His happiness was evident. So many adventures Jackie that you and Mike shared, and I hope those provide comfort as you navigate a new normal. Our deepest sympathy, Sue Barrows and family

Jackie: I was both saddened and shocked to read about Mike's passing in the Portland Peace Corps Newsletter today. He was always friendly. His stories of Iran and the life he shared with you were always engaging. My condolences to you and your whole family on the sudden loss of Mike.

I miss the adventures with Mike. He was always out exploring something new, always trying some new experience, or new food, or making new friends on the fly. With the exception of my army years, I think any time I spent with Mike was always the best and the most fun. He was the most interesting civilian I ever knew, which says a lot. He has definitely left his mark on this world, and it will be a more boring world with him not around anymore, they just don't make people like him anymore.

I was so sorry to see that Mike had passed. We haven't been in contact for many years but I have fond memories from our years at the PSU geography department and with Jackie later. Mike was always such a character with wonderful stories and a great sense of humor and adventure. I still have one of his photos in my home. Jackie I wish you and your family the best, Mike was a very special man.

There are some people in your life that you may only have shared a few years with, but who leave a lasting and warm place in your heart... Such was Mike and Jackie. We were together on a job in exotic Persia (Iran) and shared many great moments and adventures. I was recently thinking of them, and decided to call, only to find the old number was no longer in service. So I went online to try and track them down to find that Mike had recently passed. He was QUITE A MAN, and friend, no matter how...

Mike was a very dear friend We loved hearing about his travel adventures around the world We were grateful for his friendship He will be sorely missed
