Michael was one of the few people at KBOO who was truly well-loved by everyone. He worked tirelessly to help the station in so many ways!!! Michael you were a brilliant strategist and grant-writer, someone who truly understood the importance of pushing KBOO forward into the digital age, to stop dragging our old analog feet and get with the times. Michael, we all love you here and will miss you terribly. What a sad day for Portland.

Michael was a fellow student and stable presence for the many years I was in Julie's Tuesday evening yoga class. Even after I moved to another class, I cross paths with Michael regularly, and he always had a warm smile for me. On this weekend of Michael's memorial service, Alan and I want to express how very sad we are about the sudden and devastating loss of a humble and extraordinary man and to give our love and support for Julie and also to Michael's daughters. Michael was my colleague on the KBOO board, and we served on several key committees together. He was always very kind, respectful, and helpful. His humor and humility were very refreshing. His insights were crucial to our successes. Wonderful man.

Michael has been an important person in my life from the 60s when I was a contributor to Willamette Bridge and then The Scribe. I met up with him again in Julie's Yoga class, and later he was a fellow adjunct faculty member at PSU, who helped, during my presidency of the Part-time Faculty Union (PSUFA) to make sure our books were well kept, by organizing members to conduct an annual review. Michael's patience and quiet dedication over the years has been a blessing to me and many others.

Michael worked with me at Willamette Week for a year, and I remember him as journalist, diligent and unruffled, thoughtful and wise. I used him as a grantsman more than once, and he was a master of that craft. I played in his poker game a couple of times, and he in mine. My condolences to his family. Portland has lost a rare human being and I have lost a friend.

I met Michael at a draft counseling conference at Lewis and Clark College during the Vietnam War. Someone had stolen the Selective Service System policies manual, so that draft counselors could finally see them to assist draftees. I immediately sensed that Michael was an incredible person, destined to help transform Portland into the Portlandia that exists today.
