Not sure what to say?

My children and grand-children were/are marching band members. Just the other day I was telling them about Mickey Zand's Marimba Band, as we referred to ourselves at Rhodes High School. I'm sorry I didn't track down Mr. Z. while he was still alive to tell him how much I admire his dedication to the band program. I don't think I fully appreciated it at the time but I do now. But at least I can assure his family he was deeply loved. Catherine Tallian Lynn, JFR class of 70

I just learned of Mr. Zand's passing. I cannot tell you what a great inspiration he was to me. He will always be remembered as the best band teacher and also as a friend. My deepest sympathies to the Zand family. Bill " Burly Bear" Saepic class of 1970

It's hard for me to condense my appreciation for Mr. Zand into a few sentences. From Cokes n Jokes times to serious rehearsals, Room 400 was a very special place, thanks to Mr. Zand. Such a caring, wise, and truly WONDERFUL teacher! My heartfelt condolences to the Zand family. May the Lord give you comfort and strength in the days ahead.

So sorry for your loss Irene. I really enjoyed it so much when Michael played at church. He was so very talented. I remember him from when he taught at South High School. I am sure he left wonderful impressions for so many.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the family on the loss of Mr. Zand'. He made band and orchestra fun, challenging and rewarding. I always smile when I think of classes, performances, Club 400 and being a helper during study hall. Thank you Mr. Zand!

Marcie Schmidt Cassaro, Class of 1972

To Irene and Family, I was lucky enough to work, teach, at J F Rhodes with Mike from 1983 to his retirement. I very much enjoyed Mike playing the Marimba at his retirement dinner. It was very nice ! Mike sure did an excellent job working with and teaching our students!! I and many others will miss , the Man , Mr . Zand ! God Bless , John H Clay , retired CMSD

Michael was not only marimba performer. For us, his cousins from distant Poland he was the guide to America. He - with his gentle charm, but discrete irony sometimes - commented, explained, just showed us Cleveland, but other parts of the U.S. as well. For us, coming from a "distant land" he was always helpful in the best possible way. While being with with Him we always felt secured, and easy. This is a personality we would like to wish to everyone. What a loss! Remain in peace,...

Mr. Zand was my favorite band teacher. I will never forget his kindness and love for music. He showed me the yearbooks from years ago where the band used to be very large. My deepest sympathies to the family. My daughter is now in band and I had just recently shared this memory with her. She chose clarinet because I used to play! May these kinds of memories comfort you in your loss.
