Read MoreI am just now learning of the passing of Dr. Lelong. I was a student in several of his plant tax classes nearly 40 years ago. I am now a Physics teacher nearing my own retirement, but to this day, I strive to treat my students with the same fairness and interest and compassion that I learned from him in how he treated us as his students.

I attended USA in the early 1970s, Biological Science degree. Of all courses taken, there was one I enjoyed more than any other; Taxonomy of Flowering Plants. Dr. Lelong had the skills to make the course An adventure. If asked about college, I will always mention that course and Dr. Lelong. I feel lucky that I got to be one of his students.

Dr. Lelong was the most inspiring professor that I ever had. He gave me the gift of a life-long love of trees. I remember going on field trips to the Blakeley River basin and seeing bigleaf magnolia for the first time. He was a lovely man, kind, warm and caring. I am forever grateful to his family for being a refuge for me. Mrs. Lelong, Monique, Caroline and Marc, you are in my heart, now and always. Janet
