Not sure what to say?

In the process of planning the 40th reunion for Gordon High School, we learned sadly of the death of Mike. We had a few classes together and were not close friends - only speaking acquaintances - but I will always remember Mike as being a gentlemen and fine athlete. My sincere condolence to Mrs. Chonko and the children. You have lost your beloved husband and father, and we have lost a friend and wonderful role model and educator. Sincerly, Emily Phillips

I am so sorry to learn of Coach Chonko's passing. I feel very lucky to have known him as a coach, homeroom teacher, church member at MDPC, and friend. I will continue to hold such fun memories of him coaching our all-girls gymnastic team at CHS. Practicing back hand springs and balance beam with him as a spotter taught me a lot about building trust, laughing at my mistakes, and most importantly, to keep trying. His patience, humor, and kindness were wonderful gifts he shared with all of us.

Dear Chonko Family:
I have just heard of Coach's passing. I wish to offer my humble sympathy. I had the pleasure of working in the Coach's office in 1973. On some Friday's I would make lasagna for the coaches. Coach Chonko was always in line. He was a wonderful caring man. He really made a student feel special and would give them a confidence they may never have found if not for him. I am sure that he is now coaching a team in Heaven....Judith Darcy-Caid CHS class of 73

I have often thought of Coach Chonko in the nearly 20 years since I graduated from Clarkston High School. He was my first homeroom teacher as I entered high school and also coached the gymnastics team I was on. He was one of those teachers I always thought about. He really made an impression on me. I am sad to know that he is no longer able to inspire other kids as they grow into young adults - he was so good at it. He was one of the COOL teahers. I will miss him - even though I had not seen...

To The Family,

I was sadden to hear about the lost of Coach Chonko. I was fortunate enough to have been taught by him at Clarkston High School in the late 70's early 80's. Coach Chonko assisted us on the Gymnastic Team. We often talked about growing up as a teenager, music, and life in general. He was a terrific person! I often thought of him over the years. I'm sure that he will be sorely missed by the family. May God Bless you and keep you in this time of lost. May all of the...

Mike was remembered at the service in such wonderful ways by so many people. I was amazed at how many people he touched with his life and what a difference he made by being here. I can still see him with Scottie by his side and that wonderful smile lighting up the room. I am truly proud to say that he was my cousin. He will really be missed and I will keep the family in my prayers.

My sister called me from Georgia with the news today. I was a linebacker at Clarkston in the mid 1980's. My deepest sympathies to his family.

Coach Chonko was a solid teacher, man, and mentor... and contributed to the development of many of us.

Thanks Coach.

Mike was my very first best friend. I loved him like a brother. My first memories of playing with anyone other than my sister were of Mike. Me , Mike, Janice and Steve were fast friends even before we started school at Eastlake Elementary and Mike was the best of us. I can see that Mike's life was one well spent. He touched many lives in very positive ways and he will be remembered and loved forever. But we were the first. The band of four. Playing under the streetlight after dark. Turning...
