Mike Doroshenko

Mike Doroshenko passed away at the Invermay Health Centre on October 24, 2015 at the age of 92 years. Mike was born on the family farm in the Rama district on December 7, 1922 to Wasyl and Anastazia (Bodnarchuk) Doroshenko. He attended Bellenden school until age sixteen, when his father gave him a grub hoe and he was off to clear land as well as help on his parent’s farm. One winter, he worked at a logging camp north of Hudson Bay. Throughout the next winter, he gained employment at a Reserve in a saw mill, where he earned $0.43 per hour. Then at threshing time he worked for $0.25 per hour. In 1955, after his parents’ passing, Mike started farming. On June 16, 1956, he was united in marriage to Sylvia Dubas at the Kyziw church. Together they were blessed with four children: Patty, Peter, Donna, and Lydia. From 1970 to 1975, Mike served as secretary-treasurer for both the Kyziw church and Bellenden Hall. This included the maintenance every summer from 1970 to 2011 for both. After twenty-five years on the homestead, Mike moved his family to a new location just a half mile east. Mike loved his farming and continued to work until he turned 86 and retired from the farm life he loved so much. On October 4, 2012, as his health failed, he entered the Invermay Health Centre, where he continued to reside until his passing. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Mike was predeceased by his parents, Wasyl and Anastazia and eleven brothers and sisters: Nick, John, Fred, Metro, William, Annie Bartko, Dolly Korchinski, Margaret Leniuk, Verna Dowhan, Mary Zaplitney, and Catherine Wolkowski. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Sylvia; his children: Patty; Peter (Cathie) and step-granddaughters, Natasha and Stephanie; Donna and Lydia (Brian Dygdala); as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. Prayers were held on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at 7:00 pm from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora. Funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at 10:30 am from the Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Rama with Very Rev. Fr. J. Rac as celebrant. Rite of Committal followed in the Kyziw Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Bellenden district, south of Rama. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy, may make donations to the Kyziw Ukrainian Catholic Church or as Mass Offerings, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Mike Doroshenko.
