Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel - Wilmington Obituary

Lawrence Michael “Mike” Robertson, 68, of Kure Beach, NC, passed away at his home July 5, 2022. He was born May 29, 1954 to the late Joe Henry “Bill” Robertson and Jennie Kure Robertson.

Mike is preceded in death by his sister, Tony Robertson Banks, and his parents, Bill and Jennie.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lisa Robertson, of the home; son, Paul Robertson (Kristy), daughter, Kelsey Robertson Morris (Luke); sister, Pat Robertson Rice; uncle, Andrew Emile Kure; grandchildren, Natalie, Raylan, and Hazel; sisters-in-law, Sherry Sunderland and Ronda Meehling; and nieces and nephews, Kure Elizabeth Hern, Blair Van Coutren, Kristen Rice, Ashleigh Spaulding, Jordan Spaulding, and Ryan Meehling.

He graduated from Hoggard High School and later attended East Carolina University.

Mike was a lifelong member and supporter of Kure Memorial Lutheran Church and the Kure Beach Volunteer Fire Department. Shortly before his passing, he received a plaque for his 45 years of volunteer work with the fire department and his service as their treasurer. He also served as a Boy Scout leader and T-ball coach. However, one of his most far-reaching accomplishments was the instilling of work ethic in hundreds of high school and college kids who worked for him on the pier during the summers. Being one of the founding members of the Got-Em-On Club, he assisted with creating an ongoing community project which is the East Coast Got-Em-On King Mackerel Tournament which benefits the local volunteer fire departments. Through his many interviews about Kure Beach’s history, Mike has brought much positive attention to Kure Beach’s tourism and business industry.

For the last 38 years, Mike has been keeping the dream alive of his grandfather L.C. Kure, who was the first builder of Kure Pier in 1923. Mike represented the third generation of pier running, and under his guiding hand, the pier business has expanded to include Jack Mackerel’s Island Grille, By The Pier Motel, and the Hi-Tech Arcade. Due to the destruction of Hurricane Bertha in 1996, the entire pier was destroyed, and Mike had to completely rebuild the pier house and 777 feet of pier. Seven other hurricanes required partial rebuilding of the pier. In 2018, Mike proudly relinquished his ownership and management to his son, Paul Robertson, who represents the fourth generation.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of his service to the Kure Beach Fire Department at 117 Settlers Ln, Kure Beach, NC 28449.

A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.

Not sure what to say?

Mike will always be remembered by me but, especially every time I go to Kure Beach Pier

Mike was a pleasure to know and his Friendship over these last few decades has so been enjoyed. He was never to busy to help a friend.

As a paint contractor, my sons and I painted the Kure Beach pier house several times over the years, plus painting at Mike & Lisa's house. Like many of those I painted for, I considered Mike not only a customer but a friend. I remember Paul and Kelsey when they were just kids, and had the pleasure of getting to know Paul a little as an adult the last time I painted the pier house. Kure Beach is a special place, and would not be the same without the Robertson family.

I was at the pier today october 9, 2022 and ask if Mike had been in today and was told he died this past July. I was both shocked and sad. I had no idea he had been sick or passed away. My husband and I would chat with Mike on our trips down from Cary we will miss him its not the same without him. We are so sorry for your loss.

Mike was one of the best people I've ever met. I love working on the pier! It was some of my best best memories. The things he taught me have always stuck with me. I will be forever grateful for him. He was a "dad" to us kids especially the one's that didn't have one around. Lisa, I'm so sorry for your lose! My prayers are with all of Mike's friends and family. He is missed.

Just was visiting at Kure and heard. Prayers to the Robertson family. Lots of fond memories of Mike starting with rides to Hoggard, working at the pier, life guarding, and just having fun. Each day of life needs to be cherished. Rest in peace and God bless.

Growing up with you and the time we spent going to California after graduation has been the highlight of my life. Sure wish I could have spent more time with you. Love You Brother

We have owned a home at Kure Beach since the 90s but only met Mike a year ago He certainly appeared to be an upstanding person. We thank God for his life and his influence with his family and in the community.

I helped take care of Tony and Jennie and I wish I could've helped take care of you. You and Pat and Lisa brought me to Kure Beach, helped me find a place to live, and gave me one of the best jobs I've ever had on Kure Beach Pier. Mike, you were like a brother I never had. I love you more than you could ever imagine, and I'll never forget you. When I go off the pier, I'll be swimming to your fishing hole to see you. All my love, Susan Frissell (cousin it).
