Mildred YOUNG Obituary

YOUNG (Acker), Mildred Victoria Mildred Victoria (Acker) Young died peacefully on the morning of October 4, 2017. She had been battling chronic medical conditions for several years. Mildred was born to Frederick and Mary Jean Acker on March 9, 1924 in a house in Quincy, Massachusetts. She was quite artistic and musically talented. She especially excelled at the piano and organ. Mildred attended North Quincy High School which is where she first met her future husband, David. After graduation, she attended Simmons College in Boston where she trained to be a nurse. She continued nursing until she and her husband left the Boston area about the time she had her first child. She and David moved to Maryland in 1952, California, in 1955, and finally settled in Austin, Texas, in 1958 when David was offered the job of Director of the newly formed center for computer studies at The University of Texas. Mildred was very supportive of David's career as a mathematics and computer science professor throughout the rest of their lives together. After their children were grown up, Mildred got to accompany David around the world to conferences and guest professorships. Mildred renewed her Nursing credentials in 1972. She was a Red Cross volunteer and often coordinated Red Cross shelters during hurricane season. She was an active member of The Church of the Good Shepherd, teaching First Grade Sunday School for several decades and playing the piano for the children's services. She was involved in other women's groups at the church as well. In 2013, her son William and daughterin-law Linda convinced her to move to an Assisted Living facility in Arizona, very close to them and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Watching the little ones would light up her eyes in her last four years. She was always a kind and gentle person and loved by all who knew her. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 59 years, David M. Young Jr., and her brother, Harold Acker. She is survived by her brother, Earle Acker, her sister-in-law Christine Sorenson and her three children, William Young with his wife Linda, Arthur Young, and Carolyn Young. Also surviving her are two grandchildren, John Young (with wife Katie) and Sara Heitzinger (with husband Jonathan), and five great-grandchildren along with many nephews and nieces. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 1:00 PM at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd at the corner of Windsor Road and Exposition Boulevard. In lieu of flowers, please give to the charity of your choice. Obituary and guestbook available online at www.wcfish.com

A dear lady! I was Mildred's across the street neighbor and became enamoired with her kind and loving way of dealing with life. One of our most delightful tines was my taking her shopping for "something special prior to a visit with her greatgrands. She selected a shirt that had sequins and we laughed and laughed at the thought that the babies would realize that they had a very "with it" granny!
May she rest in peace,

What a beautiful tribute to the wonderful and kind hearted, Mildred Young. I grew up at Good Shepherd always enjoying her smile. She will continue to be a treasure.

This remarkable woman was a joy to our choir for many years. She kept our music filed and cataloged each week. We thought of her as a favorite aunt and had an azalea plant ready for her birthday each spring. Her hats are a Good Shepherd legend. I loved looking out from the choir loft and seeing which hat she would choose in "her place" in the side chapel near the front of the church. We are indeed blessed to have known and loved her so many years. Glenda Goehrs, Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Austin.

Mildred was a family friend in Austin since the 1960s. Her warm personality, laughter, and charming conversation made her a delightful dinner companion. As she developed ailments late in life, she bore them with dignity and good humor. Mildred was always modest about her many accomplishments. I feel honored to have known this great lady.
