J.W. Williams Funeral Home, Inc. - Cordele Obituary

Mr. Charlie Rufus Burton of 345 Albany Annex Road, Americus, Georgia died at his residence on Sunday, September 15, 2024.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, September 21, 2024 at 10:00 AM in the sanctuary of Whole Truth International Ministry in Americus, Georgia.  The burial will follow at Staley Memorial Garden in Americus, Georgia.

Mr. Charlie Rufus Burton affectionately known as “Preacher” was born July 2, 1950, in Sumter County,  Georgia. He was born to the loving parentage of Estelle Burton.

As a child, he grew up and received education from the public school system. He completed his years of formal  education at Plains High School in Plains, Georgia.

After years of farm life in southwest Georgia, Charlie realized it was not life for him. He moved on to construction where his interest peaked. He paid attention to contractors’ instructions and learned more about building from the ground up. His diligence and keen eye completed his skill set. But amid learning, Charlie suffered an injury that would lead him to the path where he found his purpose. After completing courses in machine shop at South Georgia Tech, Charlie took his skills to Prestec in Preston, Georgia where he worked and began mastering his craft as a Machinist. After over 30+ years of service with the company, he built dyes for Cooper Lighting that produce lighting all over the world. Not bad for one born of humble beginnings in Sumter County, Georgia.

On Sunday, September 15, 2024, he transitioned from life to life everlasting. Along with his mother, Estelle, his brothers, Willie Burton and Henry Lee Burton, they  also preceded him in death.

Cherishing his life he leaves his wife, Darlene Burton of Americus, Georgia; his daughters, Teresa Mann (James) and Felicia Hurley both of Americus, Georgia; his grandchildren, Keshonna Hurley, Briana Thomas, Deontravis Hurley, Ja’Kerria (Jada) McNeil, Ladasha Thomas, Devon’tavious (Lexie) Hurley, Mic’quvious Powell, and Anthony Thomas, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Jayden Hurley, Marcus Leverette, Daelyn Harper, Aubrey  Leverette, and Milani Tyson; his sister, Rosa Mae Solomon of Americus, Georgia; a host of other   relatives and many sorrowing friends.
