Reverend Murray Eugene Burr, of North Little Rock, Arkansas, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, October 8th, 2005, at the age of eighty-six years. He was born March 16th, 1919 to Buck and Mamie (Bennett) Burr of Merryville, Louisiana.
He is preceded in death by his loving parents and brother Rollie. He is survived by his faithful and constant companion of 58 years, Hattie; one daughter Janet (Burr) Holmes and her husband, Reverend Joel N. Holmes; two grandchildren, Andrea (Holmes) Cypert and her husband, Roger Cypert and Nathan Holmes and his wife, Amanda (Davies) Holmes; and one great granddaughter, Cydney Ellen Cypert; and one great grandson on the way, all of North Little Rock, Arkansas; two sisters, Mary Alston of Vidor, Texas and Bert McCarty of Cleveland, Tennessee; two brothers, Bryant Burr of Vidor, Texas and Charles Burr of Lufkin, Texas.
He graduated from Merryville High School in 1938. He went to Louisiana State University briefly, before answering his call to the ministry at the age of twenty-one.
Reverend M. E. Burr, stationed in Iceland, served his country during World War II in the United States Army. In 1942, he was given an honorable discharge. He began to evangelize across southern Louisiana and Texas.
Murray married Hattie Ellen Welch of Oakdale, Louisiana on December 24th, 1946. They were blessed with one daughter, Janet Lynn (Burr) Holmes of North Little Rock, Arkansas. During their early days of ministry, the Burr’s pastored churches in Oklahoma and Texas. In 1953, Reverend Burr accepted the pastorate of Faith Tabernacle Apostolic Church in Port Arthur, Texas; where he remained pastor for forty-two years.
During his early years, he was affiliated with the United Pentecostal Church, International and served on various boards and committees. He was also a founding member of the Apostolic Ministers Fellowship.
He was known throughout the Jesus’ Name, Pentecostal-Apostolic Movement as a prolific writer, who wrote scores of articles instructing and admonishing the Movement. He served as editor of the Texas Centennial and the Apostolic Standard.
Reverend M. E. Burr was known as a Bible teacher who conducted numerous camps and conferences across our country. He enjoyed teaching on the subject of the end-time. He also taught in many Bible colleges across the Pentecostal Movement.
He was a poet and published a book of poetry, “Minor Symphonies From the Sabine.”
Reverend Burr will also be remembered as a generous benefactor. He was instrumental in building numerous churches in India and Brazil and supported missionaries for many years. He also supported home missions churches and new ministers here in America.
In 1995, Reverend Burr retired from pastoral duties and moved to North Little Rock, Arkansas to be with his daughter and family. During retirement, they also stayed at their beloved ranch in the Texas Hill Country. After pastoring, he traveled to various states to mentor other ministers and teach Biblical Truths from the Word of God. During his final years, he was a member of the First Pentecostal Church of North Little Rock, Arkansas.
Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., Tuesday at First Pentecostal Church, 1401 Calvary Road, North Little Rock. Funeral services will be held 7:00 P.M., Wednesday at the church.
