Not sure what to say?

This man was an inspiration to me. I played 3rd clarinet beside him for a year. I asked him why he played 3rd, and he said he wanted to have fun, that he was no longer trying to impress anyone. Of course, he did impress me - often in performances he would break out into spontaneous jazz riffs, improvising so perfectly that no one could tell it wasn't the written music, even if it wasn't a jazz piece. I included him in my final thesis for my BSB, referencing how he would transform when he...

Murray Sullivan, Calder City Concert Band

My condolences to Murray's family. Murray was truly a clarinet icon in the GR music community. I had the privilege and honor of playing clarinet with Murray in the Grand Rapids Symphonic Band for many years and most recently with the Calder City Concert Band. He was a great musician and a terrific guy.

I had Mr.Sullivan in the late 1960's at Riverside .I enjoyed my years in band under his teaching, and I am most greatful.that he taught me to appreciate many types of music.Thank you Mr. Sullivan

Calder Band will miss Murray. I played several years there with him. Condolences to the family. Rose Maleport

Stellar teacher. Great man. Impressive life, full of achievement. Rest in peace, Murray. You will be missed. You will never be forgotten.

RIP Mr. Sullivan.
Mr. Sullivan was my father's colleague and friend at RJH for two decades. I began taking private clarinet lessons with Mr. Sullivan when I was in the 5th grade and continued until I went on to Creston and I always begged him to play something. He was quite talented. I remember him as being a demanding, but a caring "master" teacher. As a 13 year old, I was amazed at all of the instruments he could play, and that he could pick out who played a wrong note. He turned me...

RIP Murray. We thoroughly enjoyed your clarinet playing when you were principal clarinetist in the Kent Philharmonic Orchestra. We also enjoyed it when you wore your lederhosen to the Calder Festival of the Arts when the German band played. We will miss you. You are now up in heaven playing clarinet/oboe duets with Flo. Much love from your friends at the Kent Philharmonic Orchestra.

I played in the GR Symphony with Murray and his first wife Florence(Flossie).
They both were fine musicians. He will be missed.

Dan (Laura) I am so sorry for your loss, especially knowing what it is like losing a Father. My condolences to the entire family.
