Byles Memorial Home - New London Obituary

Nancy Elizabeth McCord Colwell passed away peacefully on December 18, 2025, after a short illness. She was born on March 30, 1953, in North Stonington, to Robert and Elizabeth (Betty) Bemis McCord.

Nancy married Keith Colwell on June 7, 1973, at the United States Coast Guard Academy. A devoted homemaker and mother, she moved throughout the country as Keith’s Coast Guard career took their family to both coasts, the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico. Following Keith’s retirement, Nancy continued her dedication to children and education by working as a teacher’s aide in the Stonington and North Stonington school systems.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband Keith; her  son, Brian Colwell (Lacee), and their sons, Aiden and Mason; her daughter, Karen Swinea (Sam); her sister, Marsha Fischetti (John); her brother, David McCord; and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Calling hours will be at Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames Street, Groton CT from 3-5 pm on Monday, December 22, 2025.

Not sure what to say?

Prayers being lifted for the Colwell and McCord families. Cherish the good times and the memories. I'm so sorry for you loss, Karen.

Nancy was one of the kindest, sweetest people we ever had the pleasure to meet. We enjoyed getting to know her and Keith better during Tom's assignment to the Coast Guard Academy and working with Nancy and Keith on the CGA Class of 1973 reunion committee. Keith and family, we hope your memories of Nancy and how devoted she was to her family will comfort you at this difficult time.

We extend our sincere condolences to Keith and family on the passing of your dear Nancy. We are most grateful to have last seen Nancy and Keith at our remarkable and joyous CGA Class of ‘73 50th Reunion. We share in your loss, Ruth and Bob Johnson

We have known Nancy for almost 54 years, while she was dating Keith at the CGA. Keith was in our Wedding Party & Bill was in their Wedding party. We took a sailboat trip from NJ to Nantucket Island with her & Keith and DS Lewis in 1975. (Quite an adventure!)
We remained in contact, visited, and vacationed with each other throughout the years. Loved her soft voice, laugh and stories. We went to her parent’s home and she showed us where she grew up. We will miss her & will keep...

My condolences to the Colwell and McCord family--I am so sorry for your loss. Treasure your happy memories to keep her always alive in your hearts.

Rest in Peace Nancy

Karen, Sam, and Family - we are so sorry for the loss of your beloved mom, wife, and grandmother. Sending you all so much love in your grief ❤ - Brent & Elizabeth Shannon

You were the love of my life. I miss you so much and know you are safely in the hands of our lord.

Rest in Peace Nancy
