Broomhead Funeral Home - Riverton Obituary

Nancy Ann Jensen Petersen of Cottonwood Heights, Utah passed away on June 19, 2023. She was born on January 15, 1934 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Donald Victor and Maxine Stewart Jensen. Nancy lived her entire life in the Salt Lake area and resided in Butlerville, in the same home, for 69 years. She was blessed to have married her East High School sweetheart Jay Allen Petersen on July 7, 1951 and their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on November 18, 1952. They were married for almost 72 years. Nancy felt so blessed to be able to have eleven wonderful children. She was the epitome of motherhood and supported each of her children in their various activities and sports. She and Jay were especially involved in supporting the Brighton High School Wrestling Program. Although she did not personally love camping, she loved to be with her family and joined them in many camping and fishing adventures. She was always an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving as Ward Primary President, Stake Relief Society President, Blazer and Cub Scout Leader, Ward Librarian and visiting teacher. Nancy served a two-year service mission with her husband, Jay, and enjoyed working with the Elders and Sisters in their area. She loved children and was a foster and shelter mother caring for more than 700 children over the course of many years. Nancy and Jay also opened their home, for multiple years, to Carlyle Dick and Jenny Decker, through the church Indian Placement Program. Carlyle and Jenny have remained close with Nancy and her family – visiting and communicating – to this day. She also cared for many of the schoolteachers’ children. Nancy loved the Lord. She loved her ward. She loved her friends. Most of all, she loved her husband, her children, and her posterity. She felt blessed to be their mother. Nancy and Jay’s family number 157 from their children down to their great-great grandchildren. Nancy loved to travel, read, work on crossword puzzles, attend family parties, cheer for the Utah Jazz, and visit with friends. She had a great sense of humor and loved teasing others and playing practical jokes. Nancy is survived by her beloved husband Jay; their children Kathy (Ray) Nerdin, Steve (Stacie) Petersen, daughter in law Ann Rose, daughter in law Cathy Petersen, Robyn Hintze, Jill Gibson, David (Laurie) Petersen, John (Tammy) Petersen, Jamie (Jared) Adams, and Brett (Annie) Petersen as well as 44 grandchildren, 83 great grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her only brother Donald V. Jensen, Jr. of Walnut Creek, California. Not sure what to say?

Nancy's friend is not enough, she was like a sister! I love her so very, very much. In the 1970's she was a counselor in the Relief Society and served her Heavenly Father with all her heart. Even though very busy with her family, she put one hundred percent into her calling as well as every thing else she did. She was always there to talk to, to share feelings, to give her love to you. Thank you for being my friend/sister, Nancy. I love you. I will be at Red Lobster eating crab legs in...

Morning Stars Arrangement

I loved Nancy like An aunt. She was a kindred spirit, a sister of another mother to my mom Marilynn.
Jay and Nancy shared their love with their children, children of their friends and many foster children. I always admired their strength, great Faith and the incredible capacity they had to love and share their home.
So grateful that I stopped to visit with Jay and Nancy when I was in SLC recently. Being greeted by her beautiful smile and warm hugs was such a gift...

What a wonderful life and example of Christ Centered living. May our Father Heaven bless and comfort this great Petersen family is my prayer.
