Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home - Galax Obituary

Nancy Lorene Sutphin Montgomery passed away at her home on the morning of  August 22, 2024. She was born December 31, 1935 in Carroll County to Vernia Washington Sutphin and Mary Inda Newman Sutphin.


She married Hozy Argo Montgomery in January 1952. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Hozy Montgomery in 1988 and an infant daughter Janice Carol Montgomery.


Also preceded in death by two brothers, Dorsey Howard Sutphin and Posey Elmo Sutphin and one sister Lillian Sutphin Branscome.


She is survived by 2 sons, Bobby Montgomery (Teresa Bell)  of Pilot Mt, NC, and Ronnie Montgomery ( Teresa) of Danville, VA. In addition she had 4 granddaughters, Christina Bowers (husband Eric) of Prince Frederick, MD, Anna Dalton (husband John) of Lynchburg, VA, Sarah Carter (huband DJ) of Schuyler ,VA, and Kelly LaCroix (husband Ben) of Charlotte, NC


9 Great grandchildren, Alex and Evan Bowers(wife Madeline), Joel and Leah Dalton, Deacon , DeAnna and Daniel Carter, Noah and Emma LaCroix and 1 great-great granddaughter, Everleigh Bowers.


She is also survived by several special nieces and nephews and 2 sister-in-laws. One special niece, Joyce Branscome Sutphin.


Nancy retired from Roof Top of Virginia in Galax after 41 years of service.


She was an active member of East Galax Baptist Church where prior to his death her husband had served as pastor.  Presently, she is a member of Calvary Baptist Church.


The family would like to thank her many Shady Square neighbors for their watch over her and a special thank you to the Lineberrys for their daily watch-care and loving attention to her.


Services will be Saturday, August 31st at 2:00 at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home in Galax with visitation at 1:00 ,prior to the service.  Burial will follow at the Montgomery Cemetery in Dugspur, VA

I was so saddened to hear of Aunt Nancy's passing. I have such fond memories of her when she and Uncle Hozy lived next to my grandparents in Dugspur and the summers my brother and I spent on the Montgomery farm. Through the years I always looked forward to seeing her at our family reunions and catching up with her. I always had great respect and love for her and will miss her. I have many happy memories of my time with Nancy in the Rooftop of Virginia craft shop. She had a life well lived!

I was so sorry to hear about Nancy. She was such a sweet lady and good neighbor. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

Sam was so very sorry to hear of Nancy's passing. We were without power today (it was just restored). She was a wonderful woman and l enjoyed being spending time with her at Senior Citizens Center. Love and prayers Sam and Rachel
