Naomi Rappaport

Naomi and I worked on Interviewing Holocaust survivors for the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation. Her generosity in opening her home to fellow interviewers so we could work on ways to share and improve our interviews provided such strength and fellowship. She also added a feminist element which often echoes in my head. She taught me my work was equal to the work of men which I’m embarrassed to say I wasn’t thinking at that point in my life. I met Naomi when we worked for the Shoah Foundation together. There was a group of us, including Elisabeth Pozzi-Thanner and Nancy Fisher, who met regularly to see how we could improve our interviewing skills. She was always trying to make things better. Naomi's devotion, skill, and "menschlichkeit" are heartfelt parts of my life as well as the hundreds of survivors whose lives she touched in an enduring way. She will be missed.

I met Naomi when I was the Coordinator at the Shoah Foundation. There was no one like her. Naomi did not know how to say "No." I would ask her to do an interview in Yiddish in Long Island at 8:30 in the morning and she would say, can I get a ride? She was a loving spirit and even now, years later, I would look for her when I would walk around the Upper West Side. Naomi lives on in everyone she touched.

I was a Shoah Foundation interviewer and Naomi was a collegue in that project. On my very first interview, when I was sent out to observe an experienced interviewer, it was Naomi.
I learned so much in that first experience that proved helpful to me in the years that followed. Naomi was always ready to help me with history or with questions, and I considered her a mentor. Her passing affects us all, and I was privileged to have worked with her. Nancy Fisher
