As a child, Nathan Nakis loved building and earth-moving vehicles. For his birthday, an uncle got him Army boots. When he went to Iraq, he was trained as a soldier but armed, as Gov. Ted Kulognoski put it, with the "tools of peace" _ part of a unit that builds and repairs Iraqi homes, roads and water systems. Spc. Nakis, 19, of Sedro-Woolley, Wash., was killed Dec. 16 in Iraq when the truck he was driving rolled over. Nakis was an honor student and Boy Scout and enrolled in Oregon State University with plans to become a civil engineer. He had been in school about a month when his unit was activated. While overseas, he won over children with his soccer and slingshot skills, and youths would stand outside his tent, calling his name and asking him to come play, said Joe Mesteth, his company's family support coordinator. "His heart was different than other people's hearts," family friend Mike Janicki said. "Nathan went over there to win the peace." Survivors include his parents, Arty and Elinor Nakis.

On this Memorial Day, I remember Nathan as that creative, hard working kid who was my son's best friend. Love to you, Artie and Eleanor

Dear family and friends, We will never forget our young hero, who gave his life for our freedom. Thank you, Nathan, for living your life to the fullest, and for giving your life quietly for our freedom and for those Iraqui children, whose lives you touched with your love and care. What a happy boy you were at our home and what a warm and loving man you became. We miss you and we love your family and pray for them. As fellow veterans, we salute you and thank you! J & J

Freedom has a flavor
The protected will never know." MOPH

My nephew served with Nathan and has returned to Iraq at least one more time. His life has been affected greatly; he and Nathan were friends, and Brandon was in the truck right behind Nathan.
Nathan was the first Oregon Army National Guard soldier we lost in Operation Iraqi Freedom. I believe Operation Enduring Freedom continues until all of our troops come home.

On this day and with each day that we enjoy our freedom, I would like to give thanks and let you know that I do not take our troops for granted. May you experience God when you feel your loss.
