Striving for His Family
Neil O. Hinds was the type who could laugh the loudest and dance the longest at any party, but he had a serious side, too, and had settled down to providing for his wife, Karen, and 2-year-old son, Jameer.
Mr. Hinds, a personal banker for the Bank of New York, was attending a seminar on Sept. 11 when he was killed by falling debris from the trade center.
As part of his effort to keep doing better for himself and his family, Mr. Hinds, 28, was a semester away from graduating from Baruch College with a bachelor's degree in computer information systems, his father, Collin Hinds, said.
The elder Mr. Hinds said his son had come to New York at 19 from Kingston, Jamaica. The two played dominoes together and watched basketball, baseball and football on television.
"He was fun-loving and outgoing," said Karen Greene, Mr. Hinds's older sister. "I was like a mom to him and my younger sister. He was always concerned about our well-being, if we got sick or something like that."
Mr. Hinds went home to Jamaica as often as he could to visit their mother. Two weeks before he died, she had requested a photograph of all the siblings. They put it off, thinking they had time, but a friend happened to snap all four one night after a party. "That was the last picture of Neil," Ms. Greene said. As usual, he was smiling.
You're missed, brother. You were part of my childhood from Edgewater Basic to Bridgeport Primary. I could never beat you in a foot race. Prayers for your loved ones left behind.

I remember working with Neal at Astoria Federal Savings Bank in Queens, he was always a happy guy & that's what made him so cool. I remember one day his Honda broke down on a cold winter night and I stopped to help him and as we were waiting for someone to pick him up he told me he was going to work for a different bank. It was a bitter sweet cause he was such a cool guy but I was happy for him cause he was moving on to better things. Yet, after I found out he was at a seminar at the WTC for...
