BEDFORD - Nellie Asadoorian, 92, of Bedford, died on Tuesday, April 7, 2015, at Bel-Air Nursing Home in Goffstown.
She was born in Binghamton, N.Y., a first-generation Armenian-American, and daughter of Krikor and Eliz.
After finishing school, she left for Washington, D.C., to work in what was then known as the War Department but later became the Department of Defense.
When she married her husband, Levon, they settled in Bethesda, Md., to raise a family. During that time she was an active volunteer with the American Red Cross and Armenian fund-raising activities.
After moving to Bedford in 1955, she continued her volunteer work with the Red Cross and St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Manchester.
When Levon died in 1973, she started working at Jordan Marsh (Macy's) until her retirement in 1989.
Her passion for her family, cooking Armenian food, and her love of animals, especially birds, will continue with all of us. Family gatherings will not be the same without her.
Her family includes a daughter and son-in-law, Sona and Dennis Hirth of Merrimack, and a son and daughter-in-law Shant and Jane Asadoorian of Raleigh, N.C. Also included are five grandchildren, Greta and Jack McCann of Hampton, Rebecca and Anthony Avazis of Port Washington, N.Y., Eric Hirth of New York City, Carol and Dave Anderson of Washington, D.C., and Lee Asadoorian of San Diego, Calif. Lastly, she was blessed with eight great-grandchildren, whom she adored: Aria, Dustin, Jared, Levon, Jack and Tucker McCann, and Lucas and Ellie Avazis.
