From 1950 to 1955, Newman served in the Army Reserves as a railway battalion based in Rochester, New York.

Newman was one of a kind and I considered him as a dear friend. I just saw him about 3-4 weeks ago and he was most glad to see me. We had a business relationship and we had a lot of fun in the process. He sometimes treated me to golf at NCR Country Club - along with Ray Stevens (who passed in 1999). WHAT A GUY Newman was with his New York ways - never a dull moment! I will remember him always! May he rest in peace. Condolences to the family. Tom Staley
