I only met Nick on the one occasion as he motored past my own yacht I waved to him as his little boat looked a real small cruiser and appealed to me .Nick and I talked of common friends and sailing cruising it was refreshing to meet Nick he was educated balanced but not conceited taking off cruising in the prime of youth which does not seem to be common today when most are worried about security and mortgage s . We remember a glorious young man, smiling, modest, skilful who pulled into the pen next to us in Noumea a year ago. Nick and Ellen had sailed Aquarius from Hobart to New Caledonia, safely and well. We saluted their achievement. We followed their adventures and Nick's solo sail from Coffs to Sydney. We tried to persuade Nick to come to NZ and sail in the Auckland to Fiji race in June but he put work first. Although we really only knew him briefly, it felt like he was a long time sailing mate....
