One thing Nicholas P. Steinbacher loved was skydiving. "The first time he jumped, he broke his leg, but he loved it," said his brother, Dan. "He wanted us all to go. We may do it as a family to honor him." Steinbacher, 22, of La Crescenta, Calif., was killed by a roadside bomb Dec. 10 in Baghdad. He was a 2003 high school graduate and was assigned to Fort Hood. "We camped out a lot growing up, and that''s what he loved to do. He loved to fish with his grandfather and with his buddies," said Dan. The Steinbacher family had a strong connection to Crescenta Valley High School. His parents, Carolyn and Paul, graduated from there and their sons Nick, Dan and Kirk followed suit. All three sons played football and, at one point, Dan was coaching, Nick was playing and Paul was in the stands. "Nick played football all four years. Dad played football at CVHS and Nick wore his number," Dan said. "He was proud to be able to wear the number 51. I wore it, too." Just a few credits shy of his Associate of Arts degree from College of the Canyons, Steinbacher enlisted in the Army. "He truly lived life in the moment," said his mother.
Nick, you have not been forgotten. Your legacy lives on. God bless you and your family.

In Memory of Nicholas ~ (Debra Estep)
Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you...
