MATENOPOULOS, Nikolaos "Niko," 71, of Richmond, Va., passed away on March 7, 2012 with his wife and children by his side. He is a native of Xanthi, Greece. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Froso Matenopoulos; and three children, Ike Matenopoulos and his wife, Tina, Maria Matenopoulos Thurman and her husband, Kevin, and Debbie Matenopoulos; and his grandchildren, Mary Frances, Niko, Gabriella, Demetri and Sophia; and a plethora of family and friends. Niko was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He worked at Westminster Canterbury in the engineering department for 16 years, and he was a cabinet maker and woodworking craftsman by trade for over 50 years. Westminster Canterbury became almost like a second home to him because of all the friendships he had built over the years with all the residents and staff. He touched the lives of everyone he met by his kind and generous soul. He always had a smile on his face and he had a real zest for life. We will miss him very much. He was a lifelong member of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral. He was a member of the Helenic Masonic Lodge No. 11 and the AHEPA Richmond Chapter 83, where he maintained an active involvement on the Chapter, District, and National level. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2012 at Bliley's-Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., with a Masonic service at

6 p.m. and a Trisagion Prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012 at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 30 Malvern Ave., Richmond, Va. 23221. Interment will follow at Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral or to the ALS Association - DC/MD/VA Chapter, 7507 Standish Place, Rockville, Md. 20855.

My thoughts and prayers go to the Matenopoulos family. I met Mr. Matenopoulos at Ike and Tina's wedding. He hugged me like he had known me all my life. I will never forget feeling so welcomed. I know he will be the guardian angel looking over all of you.
