NONA F. HEWITT
Born February 3, 1916 in Ulen, MN, and died March 24, 2007 in Jacksonville, FL. Nona was an active military wife who, during the war, worked at American Airlines as a Rosie the Riveter. She traveled with her husband Walter to the Philippines and endured many years as the wife of a POW. Following the war, their travels included tours to Europe and the US.
Nona volunteered many hours to the Ladies Aid Auxiliary in Ulen, MN and the American Red Cross at Ft. Belvoir, VA and Patch Barracks, Stuttgart, Germany.
Her accomplished sewing and intricate knitting skills were the hobbies she loved. She had an eclectic artistic flair and a sense of style that showed off her personality.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Walter J. Hewitt; son, Hans W. Hewitt; sisters, Rhada Anderson, Nellie Steward and Maude Harris; brothers, Schuylar Syverson and Custer Syverson.
Nona is survived by her sister, Winona Hansen of Reno, NV; children, Sandra Smith of Suisun, CA, George Hewitt of Stafford, VA, Catherine Windham of Jacksonville, FL, and Jeanine Carey of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening, March 26, 2007 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at Oaklawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to either Community Hospice of N.E. FL or the American Diabetes Association.
