Norbert Landry Obituary

Norbert Ernest Landry, "Unks", age 93, a lifelong resident of the French Quarter, peacefully departed his earthly life after receiving brief hospice care at St. Francis Villa in River Ridge on May 5, 2024. He is survived by his grand-nephew and guardian/caregiver Mark D. LeBlanc (Michelle and children Molly, Mark Jr. "MJ", and Maggy), nieces Ardath "Nan" Schellhaas, Sue Ellen Lyons, Pattie Hartney (Steve), Mary Beth Barbagallo (Matt), Nancy Chase (John), Dianne LeBlanc (Charles), his nephew Mickey Landry (Janet), along with three generations of nieces and nephews as well as his good friend, Michael Canedo (Marisol). He was preceded in death by his parents Mathilde Lopes Landry and Edgar C. Landry, Sr., and siblings Edgar C. Landry, Jr., Charles L. Landry, Sr., Wilbert C. Landry, Esther Landry Albritton, and Myra Rita Landry. Norbert was the oldest living baptized parishioner of St. Louis Cathedral. He was a very proud scholarship recipient and graduate of Jesuit High School and attended Tulane University. He was a proud U.S. Navy Sailor. While in the Navy, he served in Japan, which prompted a lifelong interest in Japanese culture and art. Following his stint in the Navy, he worked at the Chrysler facility in Michoud where the Saturn Boosters were built. Norbert was interested in and collected many different artists' works. In addition, he treasured special collections he acquired over the years. Along with his sister Myra, Norbert was the owner of the Black Butterfly, a specialty shop of miniatures and collectibles on Royal Street. He was a recipient of the St. Louis King of France Award from St. Louis Cathedral for service to the church, and he was honored as the Outstanding Senior Award from the Cathedral. He was also a Knight Grand Cross in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. An Honor Guard of the EOHSJ is requested. For many years, he was a good friend to the Teresian Sisters and an avid supporter of the St. Louis Cathedral. Norbert enjoyed many wonderful travels to the Holy Land, Rome, Germany, and Guatemala as well as all over the United States. Among other interests were fun meals with his family at Rocky and Carlos in Chalmette. Relatives and friends are invited to the visitation at St. Louis Cathedral on Friday, May 10 from 10:00 -12:00 p.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at noon. Interment will be in Metairie Cemetery after Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Louis King of France, 615 Pere Antoine Alley, New Orleans, LA 70116.
