Norma Jean Elie, 65, of Lowell passed away on May 9, 2011 in Lebanon, NH. She was born on July 29, 1945 in Burlington a daughter of George and Marilyn (Pecor) Granai. Norma was the president and the founding member of the Orleans County Foster Parent Assoc and the past president and vice president of the VT Foster Parent Assoc. She enjoyed hunting, gardening, loved going to the ocean and delighted in seeing the dolphins, and going to Foxwood. Norma especially loved her grand and great- grandchildren and seemed to spoil them just a little, every chance she had. She was a foster parent to over 400 children after raising children of her own, with the same amount of love as her own children. Norma is survived by the love of her life Merrill Crawford, Sr. of Troy, her five children: Kimberly Rappold and her husband Mark of Troy, Timothy Elie and his wife Dana of GA, Perry Elie and his wife Amanda of Troy, Mickey Judd and her husband Glenn of Holland, and Merrill Crawford, Jr. and his wife Emily of Barton, 16 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, three brothers Bruce Granai and his wife Sandi of FL, George Granai and his wife Carolyn of Coventry, and Robert Granai and his wife Theresa of GA, three sisters Elvira LaBlond of Lowell, Laura Durkee of NY, and Sherry White and her husband Brian of Derby. Friends may call on Thursday May 12, 2011 from 7-9 PM at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, 4670 Darling Hill Rd. Newport, Vermont. Funeral services will be on Friday May 13, 2011 at 1:00 PM at the funeral home with the Rev. Larry Wall officiating. Interment will be held at a later date. Should friends desire contributions in her memory may be made to the Orleans County Foster Parent Assoc., 100 Main St. Suite 230, Newport, VT 05855. To all of Norma's family, am truly Sorry for your loss, you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Norma was a wonderful woman, and great person, in everything she accomplished to do. She always talked about the love she had for her family. God Bless you all.

In my years working with foster parents in VT, what an honor it was to know Norma! She was funny and always kept her perspective when being with the kids who were placed with her. She taught me many things about caring for children and about foster parenting in general. She will be greatly missed.
