Obituary


David Haworth died in Vancouver on February 17th after a short illness. He was born on August 4th 1930 in Birmingham, England, where his father, Walter Norman Haworth was Professor of Chemistry at the University and later to be Sir Norman and a Nobel Laureate in Chemistry. His mother was Violet Chilton Haworth. Because of the threat of heavy bombardment of Birmingham in the Second World War David was evacuated to Canada and joined the household of Sir Frederick Banting in Toronto for four years. He returned to Britain in 1944 and continued his education at Shrewsbury School and at the University of Oxford where he was awarded a Demyship at Magdalen College. He graduated with a BA in chemistry which was followed by an MSc at the University of London.

David then went into industrial chemical research with several firms both in Britain and Canada and in 1971 he was appointed Information Officer at Atomic Energy of Canada in Pinawa, Manitoba, where he remained until his retirement. In 1956 he married Monica Mary Love.

David had many interests apart from chemistry. He taught himself Russian and was an avid reader on many topics. He enjoyed gardening and listening to classical music. David and Monica retired to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island in ? When Monica died in December 2010 David moved to Vancouver to be nearer his family.

David is survived by his three children: Janet ( Chris Lee ), Julia, and Andrew ( Cathy ) as well as four grandchildren: Josephine, Tiffany, Brittany-Anne and Matthew.

I am sorry to hear that David has passed but I am glad to know that he is with his beloved Monica. It was my pleasure to care for David & Monica here in Nanaimo before Monica passed away and David moved. I have thought of him often. My condolences to all who are touched by this loss. Barbara G.
