I learned a lot of herpetology from Norm when he was working in Cambria. I was so impressed with his encyclopedic knowledge but with a bit of an irascible outlook. The world profited from his presence. Would that we all have that legacy.

Very sad to hear this. Norm was my supervisor and mentor in the 1980s-90s in New Mexico and I owe much of my career in wildlife biology to what I learned from him. He was an excellent teacher and friend, both when working in the field and in the lab. I regret that we lost contact after he moved from NM to California but often thought about the many times we worked together. He will be missed.

Norman was a special friend, an excellent teacher, and a great field herpetologist. He always made field work exciting and he took advantage of every opportunity to point out and share natural history observations with whomever he was working with. In addition, Norm was genuinely interested in the well-being and academic development of the students he mentored. He was, without a doubt, the single most important mentor who started me on my professional career in biology. I will always have...
