Olan Chancy Obituary
Olan Chancy Sr.
The soul of Olan "Papa" Jasper Chancy Sr. departed this life at 6:44 p.m. on Oct. 21, 2025. Known affectionately as "Papa" to all who knew him, he will be remembered as a great man who cherished life, family, laughter and storytelling.
Papa Olan wore many hats throughout his life - from farming to ditch digging. Olan started Glynn County's Mosquito Control Department and worked every aspect of the job from mixing chemicals to spraying to identification. His favorite parts of the job were visiting Andrews Island and flying in the helicopter. While he never got his official pilot's license, Papa logged more hours than most pilots using his student license.
A gifted storyteller, Papa was never at a loss for words. Papa Olan leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter and stories that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He brought joy and laughter to every room he entered.
Olan was an avid church member all his life and even served on the Pastor's Council at Golden Isles Church of God, formerly Norwich Street Church of God. Olan was currently a member of Turning Point Worship Center, which recently merged with New Life Sanctuary.
He was born on April 15, 1938, to Catherine Buttram and the Rev. Jesse W. Chancy. He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Bobbie Tanner and Laura Ann Grooms; and brothers, Joel Dean Chancy Sr. and Jesse Willard Chancy Jr.
Papa is survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty Hendrix Chancy; half-brother, David Chancy; son, Olan (Julia) Chancy Jr.; daughter, Patricia (Rick) Banks; son, Glen (Christine) Chancy; grandchildren, Sarah Long, Michelle (Art) Wilkerson, Caitlin (James) Young, Jamie Banks and Olan (Kristiana) Chancy III, Alexander Chancy, Gabriela Chancy, Jasmine Alonso, Onyx Alonso and Xavier Alonso; and great-grandchildren, Hailey Owens, Matthew Riddle, Isaac Gonzalez, Madison Owens, Benjamin Long, M.J. Wilkerson and Molly Wilkerson.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 25,2025 at Turning Point Worship Center. The family will receive guests one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Burial will follow in Palmetto Cemetery.
