Age 79, of Manchester, Michigan died peacefully in her sleep on Sept. 2, 2002 at the Chelsea Community Hospital. Her son, James Frederick Nickels on May 7, 1956, preceded Olga in death. Beloved wife of Robert James Nickels, Sr. and dearest mother of 7 children; Aleta Diane Lambdin (Michael) of Saline, Timothy A. Nickels (Sue) of Ann Arbor, Robert James Nickels, Jr. (Mary) of Manchester, Douglas Brian Nickels (Irene) of Chelsea, Daphne Faye Wakefield (Scott) of Dexter, Frederick Thomas Nickels (Cathy) of Brooklyn; and 16 grandchildren.
Olga was born October 26, 1922 in Flint, Michigan, daughter of Anna Nina (Boesnecker) and August Frederick Schmidke. Her family moved to Ann Arbor in 1937 where Olga spent much of her life. She graduated Ann Arbor High School in 1940 and Michigan Normal College in 1950 where she met her husband Robert. She worked for Michigan Bell Telephone at Willow Run Bomber Plant during World War II as a telephone operator. She married Robert in June 25, 1949 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ann Arbor where she was a member of the congregation. Olga and Robert shared their life together in Ann Arbor and then for the past 30 years made their home, Manchester. Olga was a past member of the Ann Arbor Women’s Republican Club, a member of the Manchester 20th Century Club and the St Paul’s Second Fifties Club.
Olga was the most caring, loving and thoughtful person and friend of many. She greeted everyone with a warm and loving smile; one that she wore even to the end. She loved children and was always involved with them in some manner, whether it was raising her own children, helping her grandchildren, or working as a volunteer librarian at St. Paul’s Lutheran School. Olga leaves behind those that have many fond memories of her acts of kindness and great wisdom. She will be greatly missed by her family for her warmth, selflessness, and endless support.
Olga will lie in state at the Jenter & Braun Funeral Home, Manchester Chapel, where visitation hours will be Tuesday from 6-8:00 pm. and Wednesday from 2-4:00 pm and 6-8:00 pm. Funeral Services will be at St Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 301 W. Liberty, Ann Arbor, MI 48103.
