A. L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home, Inc. - Fredericksburg Obituary

Otis “Woody” John Byrd entered eternal rest on February 15, 2024, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Otis was diagnosed with kidney cancer and fought until God saw he was tired.

Otis was born in Spotsylvania, VA on September 13, 1965, to Winfred Joseph and Jacqueline Rebecca Bourne both of whom preceded him in death. Otis was baptized at an early age at Piney Branch Baptist Church. Otis attended and graduated from Spotsylvania Public Schools. Otis loved basketball. After graduating, he was invited to play basketball in two McDonald’s All-Star Classics. Otis attended college in West Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida where he achieved his degree in Computer Science. Otis was a die-hard fan of the Dallas Cowboys whom he would faithfully cheer on and would be in his team attire. He would be taking bets and trash talking every game. Otis was known for his fun, loving, and crazy sense of humor. He was also known for his pranks and practical jokes.

Otis was a handworker. Starting at an early age, he worked at the family businesses, Barefoot Green, and P&J Seafood, alongside his late parents, and siblings. Later in his life, he worked as a rodman for 17 years, and lawncare services for 10 years until his health declined.

Otis is preceded in death by his stepfather, Alfred Byrd, Sr.; two brothers, Alfred “Bubby”, Anthony “Jerry”, and his nephew, ShaRon Byrd.

Otis leaves to cherish his memories with whom he loves and adore, Tara Carter; son, Joshua Byrd of Spotsylvania County; his siblings, Judith Johnson (Ralph) of Spotsylvania County, Trudy Seward (Sam) of Jacksonville, FL, Sidney Byrd (Peggy), and Alvin Byrd, all of Spotsylvania County; his loving memory to his aunts, Gelette McCall-Stallings, Joyce Samuels, and Gertrude Taylor (Lawrence), and uncles, Kenneth McCall, and Richard McCall; nieces and nephews, Joel Byrd (Rhonda), Sharell Byrd, Lauren Tolson, Tameka Christopher, Brandon Byrd, Tiana Kirton (Kenny), Shaneekwa Christopher, Kierra Byrd, Aiden Byrd, Sidney Byrd, Jr. and Daisy Byrd; and a host of cousins, other relatives, and friends who loved him.

A visitation will be held at A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home on Sunday, March 3, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A memorial service will be held at A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home on Monday, March 4, 2024, at 11:00 AM.
