Otis Simms Obituary

Otis Ray Simms

Otis "Ray" Simms, of Lynchburg, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, was born on April 26, 1938, and passed away peacefully at sunrise on September 2, 2025, at the age of 87.

Ray shared 61 beautiful years of marriage with his loving wife, Esther Vaughan Simms, who cared for him with unwavering devotion in his later years. Together, they built a family rooted in love and laughter. He is survived by his children: Kelly Woodall (Tony) and their children, Alden, Andrew, Ashton, and Adam; Jonathan Simms (Kim) and their children, Hunter, Landon, and Carson (Coty), and great-granddaughter, Ava; and Amy Phillips (Buddy) and their children, Jack, Hampton, and Stacey "B" Dodd. His grandkids lovingly called him "G", a name that carried warmth, humor, and countless cherished memories.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Elva Simms; and his brother, William Simms.

Ray graduated from E.C. Glass High School in 1957. He and his parents were charter members of Thomas Road Baptist Church.

Over his lifetime, Ray worked in a variety of roles, each reflecting his broad talents. He was the Owner of Seven Hills Maid Service, Quality Cleaning and Carpet Care, and Tri-County Maintenance, and worked as an employee of People's Bank, N & W Railroads, Locker Brick, Certified Labs, and National Chem Service. His dedication and work ethic were matched only by his enthusiasm for people.

Ray's community involvement included serving as President of the Sertoma Club in the 1980s. In his early 20s, he taught ballroom dancing at Floyd Ward Dance and modeled men's clothing for S.H. Franklin's, talents that reflected his natural charisma, style, and joy for life.

Those who knew Ray will remember his incredible sense of humor; always ready with a quick joke, a clever remark, or a funny story. Even in later years, he loved attending concerts, spending time with friends, and keeping everyone around him laughing. He was blessed with lifelong friendships and was loved by many.

Though dementia touched the last chapter of his life, Ray's spirit never dimmed. His laughter, kindness, and love for his family will be remembered forever.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, September 5, 2025, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. Visitation will be held from 12 to 12:45 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at 1 p.m. with Rev. Ian McManamey officiating. Interment will follow the service at Fort Hill Memorial Park.

What a nice man. I drove through the old neighborhood a few years back and saw him. I stopped to say hi and he immediately took me inside to chat. I know he'll be missed.
