WOOTTON, Otis Guy "O.G." Jr., died September 5, 2012. The oldest child of Otis Guy Wootton and Clara Roosevelt Hubbard Wootton, he was born on August 27, 1920, at Ravenswood, Nottoway County, Va. O.G. was educated at local schools in St. Mark's and in Blackstone. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, 1938 to 1939. In 1942, he began his military service in the 24th Division, U.S. Army. He was shot by an enemy sniper in 1944. Evacuated from field hospitals in the Philippines, he eventually recuperated in Memphis, Tenn., and returned to his native Southside Virginia. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his military service. On September 13, 1947, O.G. married Evelyn Brugos. O.G. and Evelyn Wootton owned and operated Slaw's Restaurant which became a Blackstone landmark. O.G. was active in many community concerns, including St. Luke's Episcopal Church, where he served on the Vestry, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he was a life member, the Blackstone Ruritan Club, the Gideons, and Blackstone Lodge 79 AF& AM. O.G. Wootton was predeceased by his brothers, Hubbard, Johnny and Linwood Wootton. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; and three children, Charles, Jean and Jim; a son-in-law, Gary Payne, a daughter-in-law, Kathy Wootton; and three grandchildren, Jessica Wootton, Thomas and Erin Payne. He is also survived by his sisters, Murlie Walthall and Clara Mae Gladstone; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Blackstone, on Saturday, September 8, at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery, with military honors and Masonic Rites. Following the services, the family will receive friends at St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
