Pat Marsden

Obituary

Former sports broadcaster and radio host Pat Marsden died Thursday of lung cancer. He was 69.

Marsden, a colourful character who enjoyed a laugh, a drink, a flutter at the casino, friends and most of all his family, was diagnosed in January and spent time at Sunnybook Hospital.

"He had to get out of here because he couldn't get a rum and coke," his wife T.A. told The Fan 590 on Thursday morning.

Marsden spent eight years as morning host of the Toronto all-sports radio station, leaving in May 2004. He is perhaps best known, however, for his play-by-play coverage of the Canadian Football League telecasts in the 1970s and 1980s. He also worked as host of the 1972 Canada-Soviet Union hockey summit series telecasts.

Marsen was an Ottawa native, who started a career in radio as sports director of CKOY. He went on to become the longtime sports director of CTV's Toronto outlet, CFTO, returning to radio at CFRB after a stormy exchange with his boss.

After retiring and moving to Florida, he returned to The Fan in Toronto, commuting from the U.S. for the first few years. He and his family eventually moved back to Toronto. He is survived by his wife T.A., daughter Taylor, Connor, and children Mike, Patti-Lee, and Ruth Mary, from his first marriage.

I miss pat marsden

Pat will be missed by me very often. When he used to shop at the Loblaws, Queen's Quay Market where I am employed, he would always stop and talk. He would often speak first and it wasn't like he would only reply if I had initiated a conversation.

To Connor Marsden,A few years back my father passed away and I thought of him constantly. One of the things I found comforting was listening to your dad on the Fan.There were morning drives I was howling at the antics and comedy which you sometimes played a part in. So thanks to you Connor for some great laughs and I hope you have many fond memories of the time you spent with your DAD.

Dear Ruth and family,
Sorry to hear of the loss of your father. Thinking of you and your family always.

I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family of the late Mr. Pat Marsden whose person I remember from watching past TV sports events, especially the CFL games he hosted and offered expert work and commentary on as well as his personality interviews. I recall Pat being very good and personable at his job because he was natural, upbeat in his onscreen manner, and personable with guests and co-hosts.

Like my late mother, cancer was the cause that took Mr....
