CAIN, Patrick James Frank – Passed away on Saturday April 4, 2020, in his 52nd year after losing a courageous battle with a short term illness. Much loved husband of Kate and cherished father to Zachary. He will be missed by his faithful companions, his dogs, which he cherished. Survived by his loving mother Dawn and her husband Nels, and his brothers Shadrick and Casey. Patrick was predeceased by his father Brian and his father-in-law Frank. Beloved son-in-law to Linda and much loved brother-in-law to Frances and her husband Rick. Loving uncle to Emily and Jessica. He will be sadly missed by his extended family, in his home province of British Columbia, Canada.
Patrick graduated with a diploma in nursing from Camosun College, Victoria, British Columbia and furthered his profession by graduating from the Michener Institute, Toronto, as a certified perfusionist.
Kate and Patrick both began their nursing careers in the ICU unit at Valley Baptist Medical Center, Harlingen, Texas in 1994. Kate was often teased that she had to go to Texas to meet her Canadian husband. They were married for 18 years. Their love story took them all over the United States and back home to Canada and finally back to the United States to Grand Blanc Michigan, where they started their family. It was here in Grand Blanc that they were blessed with Zachary, who continues to be their pride and joy. Patrick’s cherished moments of Zachary were when he, and continues to do so, excel in his academics and his performances in his plays, as well as making family memories in Disney World. Patrick had a passion for nursing and excelled both professionally but most of all with the utmost compassion. He always advocated for his patients and has touched so many lives which will be forever remembered.
Our thanks to all of the medical staff at Ascension Genesys Hospital overseeing Patrick’s medical care. Additionally, thank you to all of the support shown by his McLaren family and the outpouring support of the various walks of life from the first-responder community.
Patrick’s most recent placement was at McLaren Flint Hospital, Flint Michigan, where he served as a front-line responder in the capacity as an ICU nurse. The dedicated professional he was, he tended to those in need who were exposed to the coronavirus, which eventually took his life. Patrick and Kate’s life and love journey together began 26 years ago in an ICU unit and came to an end, beside each other in the ICU, with Patrick in Kate’s arms, doing what they are both passionate to do, devoted towards the welfare of those committed to their care, and finally to each other. We take comfort in our Lord’s words: "No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends".
In keeping with Patrick’s wishes cremation has taken place. Given the circumstances due to the COVID 19 situation, family and friends will gather for a celebration of life to be announced in the following months.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Humane Society-Genesee County, G-3325 Dort Hwy, Burton, MI or the Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary, 12110 Lebanon Rd, Mt. Juliet, TN. Patrick has passed as we enter Christianity’s Holy Week, so we take comfort in one of our Lord’s final words: "This day you shall be with Me in Paradise"

Please accept my deepest sympathies on the loss of your husband, dad, son, brother; I went to school with Patrick a lot of years ago at Ucluelet Elementary and Ucluelet Secondary. His grandma lived down the street and taught me piano lessons. May you cherish the sweet memories as you grieve the tragic loss.

I did not know Patrick but he was a member of my extended family, and like so many of us, enjoyed serving others in whatever capacity he was best suited to do so. Like his grandmother Dorothy he was a nurse, a member of one of the most giving of all the professions. I am proud of his incredible commitment to his profession and saddened to learn of his death. I send my condolences to Kate and Zachary, and all his family and friends, especially to his mother, my cousin Dawn Ann. may his name...
