B.W. Foster Funeral Home - Portsmouth Obituary

PORTSMOUTH—Patrick Michael Muldoon, 79, passed away on May 27, 2024. He was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to the late John L. Muldoon and Claire Gagnon Muldoon.

He spent his professional career in the service of others, both as a Captain in the U.S. Navy and as a teacher and coach at Nansemond Suffolk Academy. His personal life was likewise dedicated to benefiting those who surrounded him, a strong, smart and reliable resource for helping family, friends, colleagues and the occasional stranger in need.

During the infrequent moments when he focused on himself, he enjoyed sports, classic cars and hunting for antiques, particularly clocks and items with a nautical theme.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kate Muldoon; his three children, Jeff, Ryan and Jennifer; his three grandchildren, Noah, Sawyer and Sylvia; and his four siblings, Judy, Paul, Mary and Debby.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 7, 2024, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 522 High St., Portsmouth, followed by a reception at Church of the Resurrection, 3501 Cedar Ln., Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the St. Paul Catholic Church Restoration Fund, c/o 3501 Cedar Ln., Portsmouth, VA 23703.  Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.

Not sure what to say?

CAPT MULDOON, WAS MY FIRST "SKIPPER" ON THE "NASHVILLE LPD-13". GOOD TIMES / BAD TIMES
HE WAS A SOLID LEADER FOR THE CREW. SORRY FOR THE LATE ENTRY. RIP
HM1 USN RET

Pat Muldoon was one of those rare men who lived his life with honor, quiet dignity, decency and service to the country he so deeply loved. Most importantly he loved his family with fierceness and pride.
He had a great sense of humor and ease with a good story. He will be very much missed however for those who knew him well, he made our lives full of good memories and joy

Bravo Zulu, sir! Your policing for infractions on the back hall of NSA is still an inspiration some 20 years later, and a cherished memory of the discipline you endeavored to instill in us hooligans. Condolences to the Muldoon family.

Fair winds and following seas, Cap'n. Thank you for your example of calm cool professionalism in the face of adversity. Some 30 years later I still strive every day to emulate your example. You will be missed, Sir.

Ryan and family, sending our love and support from New York. I feel honored to have been welcomed in by your family for your wedding more than two decades ago. Always loved the conversations with your father. Seeing all these notes from all over the country are inspiring and amazing how many lives he touched.

Dear Kate and Family, we extend our deepest and heartfelt Sympathies to you; Pat was more than a friend he was also Bill's Mentor and a Role-model for being a Commanding Officer. We will miss him and enjoying a Lunch at Gosport Tavern or a Dinner at Los Primos Mexican Restaurant. We feel certain he is happy to be with his Parents, In-Laws; Shipmates and friends again. May he rest in God's Peace. With love, Bill & Lyn Ungvarsky

Our thoughts and prayers to all Pat’s family. As a LTJG on the USS Tuscaloosa LST 1187, Pat was my Department Head and mentored me through several WESTPAC tours, including Vietnam. He was a great leader and teacher. It was a privilege to serve with him.

To the Muldoon family I wish to extend my sincerest condolences for your loss. May Pat "Always Have Fair Winds and Following Seas." Rest in Peace and God Bless.

Kathy and family- Brian and I are so sorry to hear for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
