Flossmoor native Lt. Cmdr. Patrick Jude Murphy had served on nuclear submarines and had recently moved to New Jersey with his wife and two children.

He was a reserve officer who was at the Pentagon Tuesday when American Airlines Flight 77 slammed into the building, said his godfather, William Slavin, who shared a Chicago Heights dental practice with Murphy's father.

Murphy, 38, grew up in Flossmoor and graduated from Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights in 1981.

Not sure what to say?

I was Pat's Commanding Officer when he was part of the Naval Control of Shipping Naval Reserve Unit, Navy Reserve Center, Forest Park, ILL. in the late 1990's. A terrific and dedicated Navy Officer with a wonderful family. My thoughts and prayers are with Pat and his family. God Bless.

Thinking of your friends and family today. Thanks for your service.

In Memory
With Honor & Respect.

Murphy was my Division Officer on the USS Sandlance. He ordered me to read "The Little Prince", one day underway. He was always very kind, extremely smart, and very humble. He was a great loss to this life. My condolences to his wife and family.

Dear Mako, Mitch and Casey,

It's ten years tomorrow that we lost your beloved husband, father and my most excellent friend, Patrick. I still miss him terribly, but also know in my heart that he is with God and watching out for all of us like he always has.

with much love,
