Paul M. Bohn, who worked for many years as an operations manager and had a second career as a teaching assistant in the Cheektowaga Central School District, died Tuesday in Sisters of Charity Hospital in Buffalo. He was 68.
The Buffalo native grew up on a family farm in Lancaster, where he contracted polio when he was 6. The disease led to partial paralysis in his legs, and Mr. Bohn used a leg brace and crutches for most of his life.
Mr. Bohn attended Iroquois High School and received a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in history from the State University of New York at Oswego, where he was a member of Beta Tau Epsilon fraternity. He worked for 30 years as operations manager at Higgins Erectors and Haulers, until the company closed in 2002.
Shortly after, he began a second career, initially as a substitute teacher and then as a teaching aide for English as a Second Language, working for about a decade in Cheektowaga Central schools. Mr. Bohn had a passion for human rights that helped him engage with international students who were adjusting to a new environment and language. Family members described Mr. Bohn's teaching work as his true calling.
In retirement, Mr. Bohn enjoyed crosswords, Sudoku and keeping abreast of international politics.
Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Diane; a stepdaughter, Sarah Boeckel; a stepson, P.J. Boeckel; a sister, Janet Kallen; and two granddaughters.
A celebration in his honor will be held at 6 p.m. March 3 in Loughran's Bar & Restaurant, 4543 Main St., Amherst.

Paul was my best friend in college. We went to Daytona beach together with some others for spring break and had a great time. I have many stories of Paul all of which showed his humor and good nature. I could never think of him with a handicap as he had too many other assets. I will truly miss him- the world will be a lesser place without Paul. Goodbye my friend and Brothet.

I remember Paul visited us when our daughter, Emily, was about one year old. He came with several gifts. One was a Holly Hobby rag doll that was bigger than Emily. We still have that doll as it was one of her favorites. He was such a gentle heart. Love and prayers to all of you. Margie Dewey Clark

It was such a privilege to work with Paul. He had such a passion for helping students. I always looked forward to talking to him, he had such great stories. I will always remember the excitement he had when his granddaughter was born around the time I was pregnant with my daughter. I have missed seeing him around CCSD so much. I am happy to know he is walking in heaven. God Bless you all during this difficult time. I am so sorry for your loss.
