Paul was born in Portland, Oregon on February 7, 1935 and died on December 25, 2012 at his home in Bend, Oregon with his wife and family by his side. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Colonel Walter and Marie Eckman. He is survived by his wife, Kathie Eckman, daughter Karen (Cam) Primavera of Aptos, CA, step-children Ed (Victoria) Wenick of Seattle, WA, Talie (Jerry) Roupe of Bend, Jay (Barbara) Goldsmith of Toronto, CN, and Gail (Bob) Worthington, of Raleigh-Durham, NC; his brothers, David (Laurie) Eckman of Houston, TX, Walter (Dinx) Eckman MD of Tupelo, MS, and Larry (Cindy) Eckman MD, of College Station, TX; grandson, Brandon, and granddaughters, Aubrie, Abbie, Bella, Kiera, and Paloma. Paul was raised in Pendleton and Seaside, Oregon and graduated from the American School in the Philippines. He graduated from Duke University in 1956, received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Alabama in 1960. He was Resident in Internal Medicine, Resident, and Chief Resident at Stanford University School of Medicine from 1960 to 1964. Paul did a Postdoctoral Fellow at National Hospital in London, England from 1964-1965 and was a Clinical Fellow in Pediatric Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. He was also a Clinical Instructor and Assistant Professor in Pediatrics and Neurology at Stanford University School of Medicine from 1965 to 1975. In 1972 he worked on the Project Hope in Natal, Brazil. Paul was a Neurologist with the Palo Alto Medical Clinic, Palo Alto, California from 1966 to 1975. Paul moved to Bend in 1975 where he started the Neurological Center. He was Bends first neurologist and practiced here until his retirement in 2001. He continued to work as a Neurological Consultant until October 2012. Paul loved camping and fishing of all kinds with his wife, family and friends in Deschutes County or anywhere they traveled including many places around the world. Paul was very involved in his community service on many boards and commissions including Saving Grace, the Redmond Airport Commission, COCCs Foundation Board, Housing Works, the City of Bends Accessible Advisory Committee, and the Meth Action Coalition. His greatest love was the Rotary Club of Bend where he served as President and was awarded the Districts Club President of Year out of 63 club presidents. He founded the endowment fund with the clubs foundation to ensure the funding for future scholarships. He and his wife, Kathie, delivered over 100 wheelchairs to Lithuania on behalf of the Rotary International service project in 2005. His favorite role was that of Santa every year for the womens shelter at Saving Grace and being a husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Services will be on Saturday, December 29. Graveside 11 a.m. at the Pilot Butte Cemetery, Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 2555 NW Shevlin Park Road, Bend, Oregon. Reception to follow at Awbrey Glen Country Club, 2500 NW Awbrey Glen Drive, Bend, Oregon. We are saddened to just hear of this man's passing. Dr. Eckman saved my husband's life in 1991. He raced from Redmond to Bend to attend to him. My husband and he built a professional friendship after this. He brought his vehicles and even his RV to be serviced by my husband at Autosport.
