Not sure what to say?

I just learned of Paul Hammond´s passing from the PSU Geology Spring 2025 newsletter. I got my BS in geology from PSU in 1983, and Dr Hammond was one of my favorite professors. His field trips were always fun and great learning experiences. I last saw him at a GSA meeting in 1994, but we immediately reconnected as if I´d seen him the day before. I miss him already.

I worked for Paul on Friday afternoons for several years, as a caregiver with an agency. It was my pleasure to serve him and have the opportunity to get to know him. A life well lived. Blessings to his family.

Dr. Hammond was a mentor and inspiration. We worked on the NSF Mt. St. Helens Project from 1986-1992 and his expertise and influence made the project successful. I am so sorry for your loss. I was just thinking about Paul yesterday and then read of his passing in the Geology Department newsletter. Paul's enthusiasm for the geology of the Cascades was inspiring.

Thanks for everything Paul. Careers begin with professors who go out of their way. God bless you on your wonderful journey. Dan Aiken PSU 1971

After all these years, I still remember Dr. Hammond. I was budding geologist at PSU and I only had a rudimentary knowledge of geology, yet he took the time to ask me what I thought about one of his volcanology theories. His interest in me and what I thought meant a lot to me and it demonstrates his character as a teacher.

I was saddened to hear of Dr. Hammond's passing. He had a profound influence on my life and I will always remember his great intellect, humor and humanity.
