I was a friend of Paul since 1998. We had numerous meetings and discussions about common topics. He was a dear friend of mine and I am deeply moved by his passing. I send my deepest thoughts and prayers to his family, which I had the honor to know on a Thanksgiving occasion in 2001.

Paul was my roommate at UVa Graduate School in 1955-1956 and a lifelong friend. He introduced me to Middle East politics and culture (and cuisine!) that led me to go on to obtain a PhD in the field and a career focused on the Middle East, I have lost a dear friend.
