AMHERST, New York (AP) - Paul Kurtz, a well-known voice for the idea that behavior should be guided by science and reason over religion, has died. He was 86.
The secular humanist philosopher died Saturday at his home in New York state. His death was announced Monday by the Center for Inquiry, which he founded. His family isn't releasing the cause.
Kurtz also took on psychics, astrologers and anything related to the paranormal through the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry and The Skeptical Inquirer magazine, both of which he founded.
He resigned two years ago from the boards of the center and committee and the Council for Secular Humanism, another organization he founded.
A World War II veteran, Kurtz earned a doctorate in philosophy at Columbia University and taught philosophy at several colleges.

Professor Kurtz was one of my teachers at SUNY/Buffalo back in the 1980s, and I was fortunate to do an Independent Study with him. He was an amazing teacher who was a crusader for truth and critical inquiry, but he also respected and encouraged each student's point of view. Although the field of philosophy has lost an icon, Professor Kurtz's spirit will live on within the legions of students that he taught and inspired. My heartfelt condolences to his family at this difficult time.

Dr. Kurtz was one of my professors at SUNY Buffalo more than 40 years ago. He truly expanded my universe with his intelligence and insightful thinking and helped give me the ability to understand the value of different viewpoints about our our lives as they are in this world as it is. He was one of the few professors that helped give me..and allowed me..the freedom to think, expand and grow. The gift of his extraordinary mind leaves this world with a great loss.

What follows the end of life? A deep sleep awaiting life again. A life without death. A life without suffering. A life without the limits of time and the grips of aging.
May the God of all comfort sustain you, console you and heal your broken hearts.
