Paul M. Mai, formerly of Catasauqua and Northampton PA, died peacefully on October 20, 2021, at Griffin Hospital in Derby CT, with his two children by his side. He was the devoted and loving husband of Frances (Schwindenhammer) Mai, who passed on January 23, 2011. They celebrated 63 years of marriage in September 2010.
Paul was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Catasauqua and devout Catholic. For many years he served as a Eucharistic Minister and lector, trained the altar servers, and taught CCD and RCIA. He also held leadership roles in the parish men's organization, PTA, and Finance Committee. He started the parish's first block party, called more bingo games than can be counted, and organized church bus trips to sporting events and entertainment venues. Paul was a member of the 4th degree Knights of Columbus, and a past Grand Knight of Westminster MD Council 1393. He was also the President of the Catasauqua Borough Council for 6 years.
In his early career, Paul worked for many years at Lehigh Portland Cement Company, which provided him, Frances and their two young children the opportunities to live in Marietta GA, Westminster MD, and Bedford IN, to name a few, where they were blessed with friendships and memories still treasured to this day. After returning to Pennsylvania, Paul worked as the shipping and receiving supervisor at Fuller Sportswear in Fullerton until he retired December 1990. Paul had a quick wit, a liking for Western movies, and was a devoted fan of New York Yankees baseball, Villanova basketball, and Notre Dame football.
Born in Fullerton PA on January 5, 1924, he was the son of Matthew and Marie (Parvel) Mai He was predeceased by two sisters, Marie Ringo and Margaret Dobil. Survivors are a son, Lawrence (Larry) and wife Jean of Derby, CT, with whom he resided, daughter, Corinne and husband Hayden (Mike) Henderson of Casa Grande AZ, grandchildren, Timothy and wife Kathryn of Mint Hill NC, Katie and Kristopher Loretz of Monroe NC, and Becky and Brian McArthur of Ansonia, CT. Paul's great-grandchildren are Macallan and Mitchell Mai, Aidan and Juliana Loretz, and Claire and Grant McArthur. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and good friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 26, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 2nd and Union Streets, Catasauqua, Pennsylvania 18032. Call from 10 - 11 AM on Tuesday at the church. Please, no flowers. Memorial contributions can be made to the church.
