Paul saved my life in an armed robbery. But first we were classmates

Just learned of Paul's death and truly don't know what to say. I met in 1984 while building a Funny Car he would be crewing on. I liked him the minute we met and always enjoyed talking to him. In later years my young son met him when Paul was giving firearm advice and safety tips at one of the Fort Worth gun shows. He made a lasting impression and friend with my son as well. You are Missed Officer Mertz!

Paul Mertz, you were an officer and a gentleman. Truly. You will be missed by so many friends.

I just heard today of Paul's passing. I'm so sorry to hear this. Paul and me were in a rock band together back in the 60's and we had stayed in touch up until he joined the police force. We had just caught up with each other on Facebook last year but hadn't talked in a few months. Paul was a good guy and will be missed.

As a rookie officer, Paul let me double with him and treated me as an equal. His influence led me to be a confident officer, with a plethora of friends. Later we became room mates and had the time of our life. I learned so much from Paul, his giving and kindness influenced me and helped me be a better person. I regret not having gone to see him after he fell ill. Everyone that knew Paul liked him and he will be greatly missed.
